Activities 2002
In addition to regular meetings....
SUMMER 2003:
Last year, the SAA student chapter was in the unique position of being located
in the host city for the convention of the parent organization. As such, we
wanted to earn money and spend it is a meaningful way for the group as a whole.
Anne Gilliland, our faculty advisor, suggested bake sales as fundraising activities – a
creative approach to earning money without having a lot of funds to put up
front. We were wildly successful and earned within the year over $400. Then
came the question of how to spend it. Rather than putting on a lavish reception,
the student group offered to cover the registration fee of three students from
out of the state. It was our way to reach out to other students and develop
a unified community of future professionals, to encourage consortial relationships,
help foster professionalism, and to bring archivists from the east coast to
the west coast. It was the brain-child of Jessica Holada, the then president
of the SAA student chapter. We were also, with the support of our Information
Studies department, able to hold a reception at the convention for all Archives
Students, UCLA Archivists, and UCLA Information Studies Alumni. At this reception,
we highlighted our students' achievements with a poster session of works drawn
from the Memoria Vox y Patrimonio Conference,the first conference on Latino/Hispanic
film, print and sound archives held at UCLA in August, 2003.
FALL QUARTER:
Elections of new officers! There is an increased amount of students interested
in archives this school year and student chapter meetings are well attended.
SAA re-registers with UCLA as an official student organization for the 2003-2004
academic year.
NARA showcases a touring exhibit, American Original:Treasures
from the National Archives, at Los Angeles Public Library that the student
chapter visits. While
there, we also take a tour of the LAPL Photo Archive and have an in-depth discussion
with Carolyn Cole, Curator of the Photo Archive.
SAA officers host first-of-its-kind
meeting with other Information Studies organization officers to increase communication
within the department and encourage
co-sponsoring of events for the school year.
WINTER QUARTER:
SAA sponsors tour of the Japanese American National Museum archives collection.
Tour led by Bob Dirig, Archivist and UCLA graduate. We get a first-hand look
at the archivist’s job in a museum setting. After this behind-the-scenes
tour, attendees have the opportunity to visit the museum and peruse the museum’s
research library.
In late February, SAA co-sponsors an event with Activist
Librarians and Educators (ALE) and tours the Pacifica Radio Archives. This
unique audio library collects
and maintains the historical programs of the Pacifica Radio network, including
KPFA in Berkeley and L.A.’s own KPFK. The content of the collection emphasizes
a common thread of social justice and contains original material from many
movements and organizations. All attendees receive a free Archives audio sampler
CD.
School chapter organizes event: What Can SAA Do For You? A lunchtime conversation
with SDSU Rare Books and Manuscripts Librarian and SAA Councilmember Kathryn
Neal. We discuss the many benefits of SAA membership, job opportunities within
SAA, and diversity within the profession. SAA student chapter provides beverages
and desert for this “brown bag” forum.
SPRING QUARTER
Student Chapter holds elections for new vice president, past VP regretfully
resigns position. Libby Spatz, SAA Secretary, fills position in the interim.
Two teams of two run for office, a close race! Gigi D’Amore and Sibyl
Roud elected co-vice presidents on May 5, 2004.
SAA, SLA, and the Horn Press
team together for a fundraising opportunity: UCLA Information Studies t-shirt
sale!
UCLA chapter of SAA is contacted by Getty Research Institute and invited to
attend a special tour of the archival exhibition, The Business of Art: Evidence
from the Art Market. Student chapter is honored to attend and tour is led by
curators of the exhibit, Maria Gilbert and Mark Henderson. The exhibit is on
view at the Getty Research Institute Exhibition Gallery until June 13.
Last
SAA event of the quarter will take place on June 4th with a tour of The Church
Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Family History Center. Open to
all, this resource center has a wealth of genealogical information. Description
of those archives used in creating the History Center’s resources will
be discussed. Attendees are invited to bring names of ancestors to get acquainted
with research methods and technology used at the Family History Center.
