Technical Subcommittee on Descriptive Standards: Process for Providing TSDS Comments
Process approved by TSDS members: 1999-08-25.
Requests for comments on standards issues generally come to TSDS
in the following ways:
- A formal request from the chair of SAA's Standards Committee.
- An informal request from another SAA subunit (e.g., sections,
roundtables) or from a group external to SAA (e.g., AMIA, CIMI)
Such requests will be handled by TSDS as follows:
- Formal requests from SAA's Standards Committee chair.
- TSDS chair assigns to a TSDS member to coordinate.
- Coordinator leads discussion on SAACAIE listserv.
- Coordinator distills comments, gathers sense of TSDS voting
members, writes up response, and forwards to
TSDS chair and SAACAIE listserv.
- TSDS chair forwards response to Standards Committee chair.
- Informal requests from any other source.
- TSDS chair submits request for comments to SAACAIE
listserv for consideration (e.g., should
TSDS respond to request? What elements of request are actually of archival
interest?)
- TSDS members vote on whether or not to respond to request
(Standards Committee chair acts as tie-breaker if needed)
- If vote to respond is affirmative, TSDS chair assigns a TSDS
member to coordinate (if vote to respond is negative, TSDS chair conveys
the sense of TSDS to the person/organization requesting TSDS comments)
- Coordinator leads discussion on SAACAIE listserv.
- Coordinator distills comments (no further TSDS vote is required),
writes up response, and forwards to TSDS chair and SAACAIE listserv.
- TSDS chair forwards response to person/organization
requesting TSDS comments.
Generally, TSDS responses to requests for comments should be
posted on the TSDS Calendar on the web site so that they are available to
anyone interested and to future TSDS members for reference.
