From the chair
Ellen Swain
Hello!
Please join us for the RAO Section meeting at SAA Boston, on Friday, August 6, from 8:30-10:30am. We have an informative business meeting and a great feature program planned!!!
The business meeting:
Steering committee members will report and lead discussion on the year’s activities and new proposals, including these items: an update concerning SAA’s response to the USA Patriot Act; a proposal to establish an RAO listserv; a report on establishing RAO session endorsement guidelines; a report on newsletter and web activities; a brief look at RAO’s history; and the election of new officers for 2004-2005.
The program:
Lynn Rhoads and Nancy Heywood, Massachusetts Historical Society:
K-12 teachers across the nation, from elementary through high school, are incorporating primary sources into their classroom activities. The Massachusetts Historical Society (a private research library) has, with foundation support, been developing a multifaceted educational initiative to make its historical collections available and useful to teachers and their students. Come hear Lynn Rhoads, Education Coordinator, and Nancy Heywood, Digital Projects Coordinator, give an overview of the MHS’s summer teacher fellowship program, its recent educational programs, its current web offerings, and its forthcoming, NEH-funded, web-based timeline of the coming of the American Revolution.
Also, 5 RAO endorsed sessions appear on the SAA Program. Be sure to check them out:
#7 "Information Literacy and the Archivist," Thurs, Aug 5
#11 "Tackling Copyright in Visual Materials," Thurs, Aug 5
#42 "From Digital Projects to Programs," Fri, Aug 6
#43 "Say What? Best Practices and Sample Projects for Digital Audio...," Fri, Aug 6
#60 "Scandal in the Exhibit Hall: Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual History Exhibits," Sat, Aug 7
I have enjoyed my year as RAO chair and thank you so much for this opportunity. I look forward to seeing you all in Boston!
Sincerely,
Ellen

FROM THE EDITOR
Due mostly to poor planning on the part of the editor, this issue of the RAO newsletter may not reach you except by email.
Contributors and committee members are working with me to revamp the newsletter and include some new columns.
One of these, tentatively titled THE MINORITY REPORT will deal with archives that document under-represented populations, as well as, outreach to those populations by more conventional archives.
Again, I apologize for the lateness of this issue and will be working through the summer to have everything in place for our November issue.
Sincerely,
Sharon Pullen
