Manuscript Repositories Section
Resources for New Archivists
This web page has been created by the Section
Steering Committee in response to requests from members for some basic assistance
aimed at new archivists, especially those with little formal training who
find themselves as caretakers of archives or manuscript and historical collections.
The links on this page are intended as a starting point that can be used to
supplement other educational opportunities such as workshops, seminars, conferences
and the SAA basic manual series.
There are a plethora of useful sites on the internet and it was a conscious
decision not to attempt to create a comprehensive gateway; rather a few links
were chosen to illustrate each core archival function and added links to supplemental
educational and informational sites. It is difficult keeping links to a manageable
size, especially when one considers the extensive scope of tasks most modern
archivists are expected to address: development, outreach, disaster planning,
copyright law, security, education, exhibits, technology, and public relations
to name a few.
We hope we have created a useful set of links to tools and information which will serve as a helpful starting point for
new archivists.
