New lists at the Centre are being prepared using EAD version 1.0. The catalogues of the Trades Union Congress archives 1960-70 and 1920-60 supplement have now been converted from word processed files to EAD via the RLG's APEX conversion project. A one year project launched in August 1998 to encode the Modern Records Centre's 'Summary guide' into EAD has now been completed. Approximately three quarters of all entries in the 'Summary guide' now have links to EAD encoded collection level descriptions, which now total some 500 files in number. We have had a project to compile collection-level finding aids since last March [1999]. A simple template was designed as the basis for all our EAD encoded finding aids to ensure consistency. This is regularly reviewed and improved, such as the addition of file entities in the version 1.0 template. The Modern Records Centre uses Softquad's Author/Editor 3.5 for creating and editing EAD encoded finding aids. The Softquad Panorama browser is used to display the SGML files. The initial development of a template in EAD and early attempts to display SGML files did prove difficult and documentation relating to the programs was found to be wanting. However, once these problems had been ironed out, experienced staff could teach the use of the programs to others quickly and easily.
Encoded finding aids are delivered across the web in native SGML.
