Description:

Before 2007, online finding aids at the William L. Clements Library were written in HTML. In the spring term of that year, students at the University of Michigan School of Information undertook a project to convert all finding aids at the Clements Library to EAD in order to make collection descriptions more accessible and uniform. The Clements EAD site was officially launched in April 2008, and is now well underway with almost 300 finding aids converted. New EAD finding aids are being added on a regular basis until the project is completed.

Encoding Procedure:

In the current conversion process, the data from legacy finding aids is input into a DACS-compliant MS Word template, and macros are used to apply appropriate EAD tags. Simultaneously with the retrospective conversion, new finding aids are being authored in MS Word and converted to EAD.

Delivery Mechanism:

Finding aids are delivered using on the fly conversion to HTML. The Clements Library adapted the infrastructure and process developed by the University of Michigan Bentley Historical Library for their EAD site. The library is working in collaboration with the University Library's Digital Library Production Services Unit (DLPS). The search and display system is provided by DLPS using the DLXS software developed and licensed by DLPS.
