Guides without electronic copy typically rekeyed or, if original is clean enough, through scanning and OCR. However, scanning typically proves to be unfeasible. Inventories are generally created in MS Word or in FileMaker Pro databases. Information stored in database form is exported as tab-separated text and then marked up using MS Word macros written in house. Parsing is done using toolkit created by Alvin Pollock of the University of California at Berkeley, which includes various parsers that are EAD version 1 savvy. Errors are then fixed using DeskEdit. Guides are listed by main topics from the Dept. of Special Collections home page and are indexed via the RLG Archival Resources program and through U.C. Berkeley's Sunsite2 server as part of the American Heritage Virtual Digital Archives Project.
