LSU Special Collections begins with WordPerfect 7.0 files (inventories), outputs the file to ASCII format, and manually tags the file with EAD tags. We initially used SoftQuad's Author/Editor, but found it to be very technical and hard to explain or troubleshoot. We are waiting for the next generation of improved SGML editors before we invest more money in authoring software. In the initial implementation, we have provided only the preliminary information, such as scope and content notes, biographical/historical notes, etc. In the second phase of our implementation, we will add the container list and location information for each inventory. Currently, approximately fifty percent of our one hundred electronic inventories have been tagged as SGML files.
