Description:

The Brown Archival & Manuscript Collections Online (BAMCO) site, created in 2002, provides enhanced access to archival and manuscript materials in collections held by various Brown University repositories through Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids. The site is maintained by the Center for Digital Initiatives at Brown University Library. As of March, 2007 there are 56 EAD finding aids available, 13 with digital facsimiles of collection materials. Finding aids will continue to be added as they are available.

Encoding Procedure:

New collections being processed are described directly in EAD. Legacy finding aids in paper format are being rekeyed and encoded in EAD, as are collection inventories represented by card sets. Some mainframe inventories have been converted to EAD components using Perl scripts. The finding aids on this site are marked up in EAD XML, using NoteTab Pro. The clip libraries and stylesheets used have been developed by the Center for Digital Initiatives staff at Brown University Library, and are available upon request.

Delivery Mechanism:

The EAD files are published as XML files and are rendered into HTML on-the-fly using PHP 5 and associated libxslt libraries. Digital facsimiles are scanned as high-resolution TIFF images, and converted into JPEG and/or JPEG2000 files for web viewing. The metadata accompanying each digital facsimile is encoded in a METS XML record, and rendered via PHP.
