Encoding Procedure:

Our legacy finding aids exist in a variety of formats - published catalogues and unpublished typescripts. Retrospective conversion began in 1998 with the unpublished finding aids which were converted into EAD (SGML) by a data conversion company, and subsequently transformed into XML in house. EAD 2002 is used for all current cataloguing. Existing EAD catalogues will be converted in due course. Perl scripts are used to automate repetitive aspects of encoding.

Delivery Mechanism:

XSLT (Saxon) is used to transform XML into HTML for delivery on the web.
