College and University Archives Section
2008 Meeting Program
Aug 29, 2008, 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM Room: Continental 3
1) "College & University Archives: Readings in Theory and Practice" Christopher J. Prom and Ellen D. Swain, Editors. Chris Prom will discuss this book just published in June by SAA. (15 minutes)
2) "Campus Case Studies" SAA Editor of Print and Electronic Publications Peter Wosh will discuss this web portal designed for college and university archivists working on solutions for born-digital records to post their reports. (15 minutes)
3) "Faculty Papers: Identification and Appraisal"
In March 2007 the Univ. of California Archivists Council/UCAC completed
selection guidelines for UC faculty papers:
"UC Faculty Papers: Identification and Appraisal" (Appendix II of
"Policies for Administration of University of California Archives")
http://libraries.universityofcalifornia.edu/cdc/ucac/collectingapp2.html
Selected members of the UCAC will give a 30 min. presentation/ discussion of the guidelines at the upcoming 2008 SAA/C&U Section meeting.
We've designed the session to offer a contrasting approach with regard
to the earlier Yale faculty papers discussion in that the UC guidelines
apply:
- to a public university system
- to a range of campuses (there are 10 UC campuses)
- to a range of FTE faculty at each campus: 643 faculty to 6,345 faculty
- to a range of 'cultures' amongst the 10 campuses
In addition to the overall review of the guidelines, the panel
discussion will also cover:
- examples of how the local cultures of several UC campuses affect the
implementation of the guidelines
- split collections: same faculty member's papers being acquired by a UC
campus and by another non-UC archival repository
- experiences applying Meissner/Greene to the processing of faculty
papers
In addition to directing C&U members to the Faculty Guidelines posted in
the UCAC web, we will also provide paper copies on the day of the
presentation.
