Digital Object Modeling and Representation: Using the Archivists’ Toolkit™
- Technical Requirements:
- The Archivists’ Toolkit™ application consists of two parts: a database in which recorded data is stored and a client application used to interact with the database. For this workshop, the AT client and backend database have been integrated into a virtual machine that uses the open source Linux Ubuntu operating system. The AT virtual machine will be provided by the instructors in advance of the workshop.
- There must be a separate workstation for each workshop participant. Each workstation must have the AT virtual machine loaded on it, as well as VMplayer (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/), a freely available application used for running the AT virtual machine.
- The workstations must be configured so that data created during the 2 day workshop will be maintained until the workshop concludes. Programs such as Deep Freeze that are used to clean workstations periodically should be stopped during the workshop.
- The host site must also have an instructor’s terminal with an AT virtual machine installation, matching those on the participants' workstations, and Microsoft PowerPoint. The instructor's workstation must be connected to a projector capable of displaying on a screen that is readily viewable from the workstation of every participant in the workshop.
- An Internet connection for all participants and instructor(s)
- It is recommended that the following applications be available on the workstations: A browser such as IE or Firefox, a text editor such as Notepad or WordPad, Adobe Acrobat, and an XML editor such as oXygen.

Implementing DACS in Integrated Content Management Systems:
Using the Archivists’ Toolkit™
The Archivists’ Toolkit application consists of two parts, a database in which recorded data is stored and a client application used to interact with the database. The open source database application for which the AT client is designed is MySQL. It can be downloaded free of charge. The AT client can also be downloaded free of charge.
There must be a separate workstation for each workshop participant. Prior to the workshop, each workstation must have either:
- The AT client loaded and able to connect to a unique MySQL database properly instantiated to work with the AT client. Instantiation is supported by the AT Maintenance Program, which is bundled with the AT client. The MySQL databases can be set up on each terminal or, to expedite the process, on a network server, which will require network connectivity for all workstations. More detailed instructions for how to do this can be provided if necessary.
OR
- Be loaded with the AT virtual machine (VM), which uses the open source Linux Ubuntu operating system, and the VM player (http://www.vmware.com/products/player/), a freely available application used for running the AT VM. Instructors can send technical staff a DVD loaded with the AT VM, which includes the AT client, MYSQL backend, and import files the participants use during the workshop. More detailed instructions for how to do this can be provided if necessary.
The workstations must be configured so that data created during the 2 day workshop will be maintained until the workshop concludes. Programs such as Deep Freeze that are used to clean workstations periodically should be stopped during the workshop.
The host site must have an instructor’s terminal with an AT installation matching those on the participants' workstations. The instructor's workstation must be connected to a projector capable of displaying on a screen that is readily viewable from the workstation of every participant in the workshop.
It is recommended that the following applications be available on the workstations: A browser such as IE or Firefox, a text editor such as Notepad or WordPad, Adobe Acrobat, and an XML editor such as oXygen.
A technical support person(s) from the workshop host institution must be available on the afternoon of the day before the first workshop day to meet with the instructors and insure that the AT installation for the workshop is functioning properly.
