Kelcy Shepherd
Kelcy Shepherd is the Five College Project Archivist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She holds a masters degree in Library and Information Science from Simmons College.
Kelcy is currently an analyst and Five College liaison for the
Archivists’ Toolkit project, an effort to develop an open source software application for managing archival information. The Archivists' Toolkit (AT) will be an integrated archival management system that streamlines workflows and standardizes archival information by providing a single, consistent, and reliable means for managing information related to accessioning, description, resource location, and donors. Prior to her work with the Toolkit Kelcy led a collaborative MARC and EAD retrospective conversion project for the Five Colleges, improving access to over 1,000 archival collections by making their finding aids and catalog records available online. Before coming to the Five Colleges, she worked on a project to arrange, describe, and improve access to architectural collections held by the Environmental Design Archives at the University of California, Berkeley.
Kelcy has published and made presentations relating to EAD and
MARC, usability of archival finding aids on the Internet, metadata standards
for architectural records, and sustainability of digital projects. With Waverly
Lowell, she co-authored Standard Series of Architecture and Landscape Design
Records: A Tool for Arrangement and Descriptions of Archival Collections, winner
of the 2001 C.F.W. Coker Award of the Society of American Archivists. She is
a continuing education instructor and adjunct professor for Simmons College.
An active member of the Society of American Archivists, Kelcy has
served as chair of SAA’s Description Section and is currently a member of the Technical Subcommittee on Descriptive Standards. She has also been involved in many committees for the New England Archivists, and is currently co-chair of the NEA Membership Committee.
Outside of her archival life, Kelcy enjoys hiking, snow shoeing,
and back country camping. She and her husband volunteer with National Education
for Assistance Dog Services, serving as part time puppy raisers for a future
assistance dog.
