Emmett Leahy Award Nominations Invited
Awarded for Outstanding Contributions and Accomplishments that Have a Major Impact
on the Records and Information Management Profession
The Emmett Leahy Award is presented annually to recognize an individual whose
contributions and outstanding accomplishments have had a major impact on the records
and information management professions.
The award honors Emmett Leahy, an icon in the development of the lifecycle approach to
managing records and information. Emmett Leahy chaired the historic Hoover
Commission on Paperwork Records Management Task Force. The recommendations of
this task force resulted in the establishment of a government-wide records management
program for federal agencies of the United States Government. Leahy’s records and
information management concepts have been widely applied in business and industry
throughout the world.
Emmett Leahy established a unique spirit of innovation, dedication and excellence
through his work in records and information management. This tradition is perpetuated
in the prestigious award that bears his name.
Eligibility and Nomination for the Award
Any individual who has had a major impact on the field of records and information
management is eligible to be nominated by an individual, organization, or professional
association. A nominee does not have to be a Certified Records Manager or a member of
a professional organization. Past winners have included users, educators, archivists,
records managers, and consultants – both within North America and internationally.
Nomination letters should be sent electronically to Charles Dollar, Chair of the Leahy
Award Committee (thecdollar[at]cs.com) by March 1, 2009. Nomination letters should
succinctly (no more than two pages) and clearly identify the significant contributions the
individual has made to the information and records management professions that meet the
criteria for the Emmett Leahy Award.
The Emmett Leahy Award Committee, which consists of the previous ten recipients and
is solely responsible for the selection of Emmett Leahy Award recipients, will review
nominations and invite nominees who meet the award criteria to submit formal
applications. The Emmett Leahy Award Committee will review the formal applications
submitted by the invited nominees and select the 2009 recipient. More information on
the Emmett Leahy Award is available at http://www.leahyaward.com. Please note that the Emmett Leahy Award is not presented posthumously.
