Benefits of Membership

 

The Society of American Archivists offers several categories of membership:

  • Individual full membership is open to those who are or have been engaged in the custody, study, teaching, or control of records, archives, or private papers, or who wish to support the objectives of the Society. Individual Full members are eligible:
    • To hold office in the Society;
    • To hold any appointive position in the Society;
    • To vote for officers, councilors, and members of the nominating committee;
    • To vote on all matters requiring a vote which come before the Society as a whole;
    • To be members of constituent units of the Society; and
    • To receive the benefits of the Society's programs and services.

  • Individual associate membership is limited to: individuals living in the United States who support the objectives of the Society but who are either not professionally responsible for custody or control of records, archives, or private papers or who are not engaged in the study or teaching of archives; and individuals living outside the United States whose primary allegiance is to their own national archival association. Associate members are eligible:

  • Individual student membership is open for a two-year period to students in degree-conferring programs. Student members are eligible:
    • To hold any appointive position in the Society;
    • To vote for officers, councilors, members of the nominating committee;
    • To vote on all matters requiring a vote which come before the Society as a whole;
    • To be members of constituent units of the Society; and
    • To receive the benefits of the Society's programs and services.

  • Institutional membership is open to institutions or agencies responsible for or substantially interested in the custody, study, teaching, control, or use of records, archives, and/or private papers. Institutional members are eligible to receive the benefits of the Society's programs and services. Each institutional member may also identify a primary contact person, who is eligible to vote, hold office, and serve on appointed groups. Keep pace in a rapidly evolving workplace. The SAA Continuing Education program provides archivists with unmatched opportunities to learn about new and developing technologies, polish professional skills, and enhance knowledge. All workshops are available to members at a special rate.

Career Opportunities

Discover career opportunities through the Online Employment Bulletin and its print counterpart, the bimonthly SAA Employment Bulletin, which contain national and international archival position announcements.

Section and Roundtable Membership

Connect with colleagues who share your expertise or job function by joining two sections and an unlimited number of roundtables. These subgroups of SAA focus attention on and give voice to the concerns of specific areas of archival interest.

Mentoring Program

The SAA mentoring program is designed to encourage the communication of knowledge and experience between archivists. Assignments are based on mutual interests and geographic proximity. Collaborate with archival colleagues to build a stronger profession.

Annual Meeting

Join more than 1,100 archivists from around the world at this annual event. This is an excellent opportunity to participate in educational sessions, workshops, repository tours, section and roundtable meetings, special SAA business, social events, and networking.

SAA Membership Directory

Networking opportunities abound with contact information for all SAA individual and institutional members in this biennial directory. An index of members by location and employer, as well as a roster of section members, are also included.

SAA Student Chapters

Accelerate your involvement in the archival profession by joining an SAA student chapter. Student chapter activities include repository tours, guest speakers, and trips to the SAA annual meeting.
