Colonial Dames of America Scholarships and the Donna Cutts Scholarship to the Modern Archives Institute

Purpose and Criteria for Selection:

Since 1974 SAA has awarded the Colonial Dames Scholarships, which enable two archivists each year to attend the Modern Archives Institute of the National Archives and Records Administration. One scholarship supports attendance at the Winter Institute, held in January/February, and the other supports attendance at the Summer Institute, held in June. In 2002, the Colonial Dames added a third scholarship, the Donna Cutts Scholarship, which supports one archivist each year to attend the Summer institute. The two-week Modern Archives Institute program provides an introduction to archival principles and techniques for individuals who work with personal papers, as well as those who work with the records of public and private institutions and organizations. It is intended to help archivists acquire basic knowledge about caring for archival materials and making them available.

Note: Registration in the Modern Archives Institute is the responsibility of the candidate, not of SAA or the National Archives and Records Administration. Applicants to the Colonial Dames Scholarship do not have to apply to the Modern Archives Institute directly unless they are planning to attend the Modern Archives Institute regardless of whether they are a scholarship recipient. Registration spaces in the Institute are made available by NARA for scholarship recipients.

Individuals who wish to guarantee admission should be prepared to send a completed application and a personal or institutional payment to the National Archives and Records Administration. The National Archives and Records Administration is willing to hold payment until the decision is reached regarding the Colonial Dames Scholarships and the Donna Cutts Scholarship.

Eligibility:

Individual archivists only. Candidates for the Colonial Dames Scholarships or the Donna Cutts Scholarship must:

  • Be an employee of an archival institution or agency with a fair percentage of its holdings predating 1825.
  • Have been employed for less than two years as an archivist or archives trainee.
  • Be working with archives or manuscripts, regardless of title.

Sponsor and Funding:

The Society of American Archivists, in conjunction with the Colonial Dames of America, Chapter III, Washington, D.C.

Prize:

Each of the three scholarships awards up to $1,200 per individual in support of tuition, travel, and living expenses to attend the Modern Archives Institute. One Colonial Dames Award is made for each of the two yearly institutes (winter and summer). The Donna Cutts Award is for the Summer Institute only.
