Election 2008

Fourteen candidates vying for three different offices are slated on the 2008 ballot of the Society of American Archivists. The slate of candidates is listed in the left column of this web page. Click on the links to learn more about each candidate.

Eligible voting members of SAA will vote for one Vice President / President-Elect, three Council members, and three Nominating Committee members. The Vice President shall serve a one-year term beginning in August and then become SAA’s 64th president in 2009–2010. The three Council members elected shall serve three-year terms beginning in August and running through the annual meeting in 2011. The Nominating Committee members shall serve one-year terms, which will begin upon election.

Questions for Candidates
Each candidate has submitted a brief biographical sketch, as well as answers to questions posed by this year’s Nominating Committee. Candidates’ responses have been reproduced in this section of the website. The questions below were posed to the candidates:

Vice President/President-Elect: What is your vision for the Society of American Archivists and what steps would you take towards promoting your goals? Discuss how you would work with the national and international archival community to promote that vision.

Council Member: As a member of Council how would you identify and advocate for member needs?

Nominating Committee: What qualities are necessary for leadership in SAA? How could the nominating committee put together a representatively diverse slate of potential leaders with those qualities?

Ballot Mailing and Deadline
A ballot will be mailed via first class in late February to all eligible voting members of SAA.  Please carefully read the statements prepared by each candidate (by clicking on the links in the left column of this web page) and indicate your choices on the ballot.  Please return the ballot in the envelope provided by April 14, 2008.

If you do not receive a ballot by March 14, please contact Lee Gonzalez at lgonzalez [@] archivists.org or call 312/606-0722 or toll free 866/SAA-7858.

Bylaws
The bylaws of SAA stipulate that candidates must receive 40 percent of the vote in order to be elected to office. Because candidates for Council and Nominating Committee have not been paired, a runoff election may be necessary.

In the event of a runoff election, the following procedures apply. If only two candidates for Council or Nominating Committee receive 40 percent of the vote, then the two candidates with the next highest vote totals will be slated in a runoff election. If only one candidate for Council or Nominating Committee receives 40 percent of the vote, then the three candidates with the next highest vote totals will be slated in a runoff election, and voters may vote for two candidates. If no candidate for Council or Nominating Committee receives 40 percent of the vote, then the four candidates receiving the highest vote totals will be slated in a runoff election, and voters may vote for three candidates. The 40 percent rule is suspended in a runoff election.

Nominating Form
Lastly, the 2009 Nominating Committee will be seeking prospective candidates for the next year’s slate. The nominating form is online at www.archivists.org/nominating-form.asp and will also be included with the ballot being sent to eligible voters in February. Please submit your suggestions for candidates for the next year’s slate by May 25, 2008.

THANK YOU to all candidates for standing for office. Eligible voters are urged to exercise their right to vote — your vote is your voice in your professional association!

2008 NOMINATING COMMITTEE
Theresa Salazar (chair), Anne Ostendarp, Megan Phillips, and Council members Ben Primer and Sheryl Williams
