Position Announcement: Director of Archives

A private firm in the Boston area seeks a Director of Archives to manage a dynamic archival program. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the incumbent will have responsibility for all aspects of the program including staff management, budgeting, acquisitions, processing, cataloging, and preservation of the collections. In addition, the Director will initiate and direct historical research projects in the US and abroad.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in library science
  • Master's degree in history, doctorate preferred
  • Minimum of 20 years increasingly responsible managerial experience in an archival environment, preferably academic
  • Demonstrated management skills
  • Working knowledge of at least one European language, German preferred
  • Knowledge of DACS, EAD, and XML
  • Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in presentations
  • Ability to interact with a wide variety of constituencies
  • Willingness to travel internationally
  • Capacity to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and to work successfully under deadline
  • Ability to work with confidential materials

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong computer application skills
  • Working knowledge of AACR2, DCRM, and LCSH .Experience with digital archives, particularly in developing policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of three-dimensional object processing and cataloging
  • Experience with Inmagic
  • Preservation training

Duties:

The Director of Archives will be responsible for all aspects of a dynamic archival program that supports the firm's commitment to its client families and their histories.

The current collection includes paper and digital records, still and moving images, scanned images, and three-dimensional objects and the Director will work to enlarge all aspects the collection. She or he will manage the processing and cataloging of materials as well as creating and maintaining appropriate access tools and an image database. The incumbent will have the opportunity to initiate collection development projects in the US and abroad, to create and manage research and publication projects, and to participate nationally and internationally in professional organizations.

Salary: Minimum $85,000 with a generous benefits program and travel budget.
