National Museum of African Art
Smithsonian Institution
Washington, DC
The Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives of the National Museum of African Art will be hiring a contract digitization specialist for a Smithsonian funded grant to digitize approximately 6,700 negatives in the Eliot Elisofon photographic collection. The Eliot Elisofon Digitization Project follows the creation of 10,700 catalogue records for the negatives on the Smithsonian Institution Research Information System (SIRIS). During the first year of Phase III digitization, 6,700 Elisofon negatives (35mm/120mm film) will be digitally scanned, cleaned, adjusted and stored on external hard drives and preservation CDs. Approximately 5,000 thumbnail images will be created and linked with the catalogue records on SIRIS. This work will be accomplished in the Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives by a contract digitization specialist with a Nikon film scanner and a Hasselblad Flextight scanner. All equipment and supplies necessary to perform these tasks will be provided on-site. Contractor should have experience scanning film and working with images in Adobe Photoshop 7/CS3.
The digitization project involves eight stages to be completed within ten months as a full-time or part-time contractor. The project may be extended for one more year depending on grant funds available in FY2009. The start date for the project is June 2, 2008 and the end date is no later than April 3, 2009. All work must be completed by April 3, 2009.
The deadline for proposals is May 30, 2008.
