Supervisory Archivist

The National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), Smithsonian Institution, seeks applicants for the position of Supervisory Archivist. The Paper Archive (1522 linear feet) is the repository for papers and other items related to the history and collections of the NMAI and its predecessor museum; primary documents that reflect the historical and contemporary lives of Native people; and the papers of Native individuals and organizations. The Photographic Archive (324,000 images) contains one of the world's most significant collections of images documenting Native American life from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, as well as imagery documenting NMAI history, research, and events. The Media Archive (12,000 items) includes archival recordings documenting the lives and experiences of Native people; documentation and production materials connected with NMAI history, research, and events; and a reference collection of Native-produced media.

The Supervisory Archivist oversees the daily operations and staff for the paper, photo, and media archives. He/She is responsible for developing and implementing operational and strategic plans and policies; supervising the archives database and planning its incorporation into the NMAI Collections Information System; refining and implementing collections use and access policies; promoting use of the archival collections by Native and non-Native researchers; and establishing donor relations. Permanent, full-time position includes full Government benefits; U.S. citizenship is required. Location: Suitland, MD.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent at the next lower grade level. Specialized experience is defined as experience which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and which is typically in or related to the position as described above.

Salary Range: $75k-$99,999
