Archival Librarian
American Film Institute

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administer all archives housed in the AFI Library including Special Collections, DWW and Thesis film/tape Library, misc.
- Provide leadership, organization, and management for the Archives and Special Collections in an experienced, dynamic, and energetic manner. The Archival Librarian will be expected to substantially redefine and re-energize the collection(s), including modernizing and stabilizing storage and display, as well as financial support through active engagement of the community.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
- Development of policy regarding AFI Library Archives including long term plans, storage, access and retention. Assess goals, identify priorities, maintain effective fiscal management, develop and implement policy.
- Handle paperwork, filing, etc related to the library archives.
- Secures and advocates for funding to support the collections and services through donors, administration, and funding agencies.
- Foster constituent relations; communicate and promote the department and the collections through publications, the web, exhibitions, and events.
Provide dub requests and other duplication issues in regard to contractual obligations and departmental needs.
- Processes and catalogues all archival and manuscript material, including individual items and collections
- Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, faculty and Fellows; operate effectively with multiple responsibilities in a dynamic diverse academic environment.
- Keeps abreast of current trends and developments in the field of special collections; remains active professionally and through service; represents the interests of the American Film Institute and the AFI Conservatory in related and advantageous internal, national, regional, and local organizations and associations.
- Works with Mayer Library staff to assess the conservation and preservation needs of archives and manuscripts, and recommends treatment. Consults with Conservatory staff to propose and implement digitization projects relating to archives and manuscripts.
- Makes recommendations when appropriate on the acquisition of manuscripts and archival collections.
Experience/Skills Required
- ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science OR significant graduate-level coursework toward such a degree OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience).
- 2-4 years of experience working as a manuscript librarian or archivist, preferably in an academic library, with an emphasis on manuscript processing, finding-aid appraisal, description, and digital archives work.
- Highest level of proficiency on all current Macintosh and Windows NT operating systems. Experience with dynamic media and video integration and applications including, but not limited to: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut Pro, Discreet Combustion, Medial Cleaner Pro, Final Draft, Movie Magic Scheduling and Budgeting Production Suite. Networking topologies and protocols, specifically AppleTalk, TCP/IP and Windows NT. Basic QuickTime knowledge
- Ability to deal courteously and effectively with staff and outside consultants. Problem solving skills are essential.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently, and to promote teamwork among colleagues. Capacity to thrive in the exciting, ambiguous, future-oriented environment of a world-class institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.
- Commitment to professional issues, demonstrated through strong interest in local or national committee work, research, publication, etc., in manuscripts and archives. Some weekend/evening work will be occasionally required. Knowledge and/or experience in film and television community preferred.

Salary Range: $40k-$49,999
