San Francisco State University invites application for a lecturer library faculty position as Reference Archivist for the Labor Archives and Research Center (LARC) of the J. Paul Leonard Library available immediately. The Center is currently located in a physically separate building from the Leonard Library. The successful candidate will be expected to fulfill a combination of responsibilities in the areas of archival management, including reference, appraisal, accessioning and collection processing. Other responsibilities include instruction, web maintenance and digitization projects. Librarians have full faculty status. Appointment is expected to be at the equivalent to the academic rank of Assistant or Senior Assistant Librarian, depending on qualifications (minimum salary: $46,524). Initial appointment for 12 months renewable annually. This position works closely with the Director of the Center; both positions report to the University Librarian.
Responsibilities: Lead person for LARC reference services; conduct appraisal, accessioning, and processing of collections; create descriptive guides; maintain and design in-house systems; supervise LARC collection and bibliographic cataloging; conduct LARC tours, lectures and presentations in research methods and labor history; develop and maintain the Center's web site; participate in design and implementation of digitization projects.
Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited Masters in Library and Information Science or equivalent archival training or experience. Two-years experience in an archival repository. Ability to provide archival research advice and instruction to researchers, students, faculty and union members. Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse constituency, and with both labor unions and the academic community. Experience processing archival collections. Knowledge of labor history, preferably relating to California. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong service ethic. Ability to lift boxes weighing up to 30 pounds.
Desired Qualifications: Experience with archival collection digitization projects. Knowledge of descriptive cataloging principles, USMARC format and Encoded Archival Description (EAD). Working knowledge of new and emerging technologies and familiarity with their impact on higher education and research in general, and on archives and special collections in particular.
