Archival Graduate Student Poster Sessions
Posters highlight the research activities of graduate students from archives
and records management programs throughout the United States, as well
as the projects and activities of several SAA Student Chapters.

a Nonprofit Professional Association"
Examines the application at the Society of Women Engineers, a voluntary
professional membership association, of Stephen C. Wagner's "eight
principles" for implementing a successful archives/records management
program.
2. Eun G. Park
University of California, Los Angeles
"Contextual Analysis in Ensuring Authentic Electronic Records of
Academic Institutions in Four Countries"
Explores the characteristics of authentic electronic records that establish
and support business operations in academic settings within the juridical,
procedural, technological, and socio-cultural contests.
3. Jan Payne and Linda Whitaker
University of Arizona
"A Multi-Tasking Approach to Processing Congressional Papers"
Offers an approach to processing collections with high donor, research,
and institutional expectations that preserves processing standards and
meets external expectations, while also supporting concurrent access,
exhibition, outreach, and digitization activities.
4. University of Texas at Austin Student Chapter
Explores Archives Week activities of the University of Texas
at Austin's SAA Student Chapter, including lectures by visiting archivists
and a Public Archives Clinic offering consultations on historical materials.
5. Simmons College Student Chapter
Presents information about the archives program at Simmons College
and the history and objectives of its SAA Student Chapter, emphasizing
recent activities and Spring 2002 forums.
6. University of Michigan Student Chapter
Presents information about the Archives and Records Management
program at the University of Michigan and about brown bag discussions,
speakers, tours, and other events organized by its Student Chapter.
7. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Student
Chapter
Explores the work of the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill's Student Chapter in informing and educating the community on
the importance of archives, online access strategies, and other issues.
8. University of Maryland, College Park Student Chapter
Highlights activities of the Student Archivists at Maryland
(SAM) group, including workshops, tours, Archives Week, and a spring 2002
conference on access to records of public officials.

"Appraising an Academic Web Site: The Department of Romance Languages
and Literatures Online at the University of Michigan"
Examines appraisal issues of content, context, structure, design, presentation,
uniqueness, and significance in a comparative analysis of an existing
record group and new online information presented by an academic department.
10. Rick Fitzgerald
University of Arizona
"Designing a Graphically-Oriented Web Site for Special Collections"
Explores challenges of appropriately incorporating graphics into a special
collections Web site, including issues of selection, representation of
collections to end users, and design.
11. Joanne Archer, Alida Friedrich, and Elisabeth Proffen
University of Maryland, College Park
"Improving Access to Large Oral History Collections"
Presents work of the MALACH Project to analyze the needs of users and
develop a system incorporating natural language processing and automatic
speech recognition to improve access to oral histories collected by the
Survivors of the Shoah Foundation.

"The Archives of the Future"
Summarizes project work by an archives administration class to create
and market an effective plan for a cost-effective, efficient archives
of the future for a hypothetical state government.

"Describing Archival Collections in an Online Catalog"
Explores issues of selection adaptation and subject description in creating
MARC cataloging records for an online catalog of the holdings of the archives
at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.
14. University of California, Los Angeles Student Chapter
"The World of UCLA Archives"
Highlights the trips, panels, and programs sponsored by the Student Chapter,
demonstrating student involvement in the archival profession and the many
archival opportunities available to students on campus.
