Make an Impact! Contest Winners

SAA congratulates the winners of the 2009 American Archives Month Make an Impact! Contest. "Did You Know Your Grandmother Was a Beauty Queen?" submitted by the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library of the Denver Public Library, received the most votes for Best Poster to Promote 2009 Archives Month/Week, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Student Chapter of SAA won for Best Successfully Implemented Campaign for its class project. National Library of Medicine, History of Medicine Division is “Celebrating the American Medical Record”

Archives Month at the Smithsonian

Trinity Church Wall Street Archives celebrated Archives Month with a targeted inreach campaign in the weekly staff e-news. Each week a different group of materials were highlighted with a short description, overview, list of recent uses, and image. Each record group was chosen with a specific internal customer group in mind.

University of Hawaii Archives & Manuscripts department showcases a Web exhibit, "American Archives Month: Diversity, A Part of the American Dream" that draws upon several different collections from the department of Archives & Manuscripts to illustrate the diversity of the student body from the institution's beginning. Materials from this collection and others are also on display in the John Troup Moir Jr. & Gertrude M.F. Moir Archives Reading Room on the 5th floor of Hamilton Library on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. throughout the month of October.

University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Library and Information Studies Archives and Records Management students are pleased to announce the second annual Archives Month Blog.

Scrapbook Wisconsin,” sponsored by the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Historical Records Advisory Board, showcases hidden gems and unknown treasures that exist in scrapbooks held by participating historical societies across the state. Participating institution(s): University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Library and Information Studies.

The Wittliff Collections and the University Archives at the Alkek Library, Texas State University–San Marcos, hosted a panel consisting of representatives from area archives who have undergone recent building projects, as well as a shelving/space planning expert and an architect. The National Archives at New York City

Check out the University of Maryland iSchool's Calendar for activities related to Archives Month, including:

  • Ian Wilson, former National Archivist of Canada, will be on campus Wednesday, October 14, conducting a seminar and meeting with archives specialization students.

  • The University of Maryland will host "Preserving the Cultural Heritage of Today and Tomorrow" on Wednesday, October 21. An alumni panel will focus on theory versus practice and a distinguished panel featuring Anne Gilliland (UCLA), Matt Kirschenbaum (MITH, UMD), and Seamus Ross (University of Toronto) will focus on "Stewardship of Our Digital Cultural Heritage."

Council of State Archivists' Archives Week/Month poster gallery.

Indiana University South Bend has American Archives Month coverage this month in the student newspaper, The Preface. Articles will include photographs of student life in past decades from the Archives' collections.

 


Other Activities

Indiana University South Bend has a permanent display in the new McDonald's restaurant across from the campus. IUSB has a display field with a rotating set of four different scans of photographs and covers from class schedules to include campus history as a part of the permanent display. These are scans are printed on photographic paper so they look like originals. There is also a plaque crediting the IU South Bend Archives in the case, with contact information for the Archives and the Archivist. IUSB also has a display up in the Library featuring the American Archives Month poster and items from the Press Kit.

The Warren County Records Center & Archives displays current and past framed American Archives Month posters.

The Woody Guthrie Archives will display the American Archives Month poster and materials from the press kit to make researchers more aware of the presence of archives.
